Kidney adysplasia and variable hydronephrosis, a new mutation affecting the odd-skipped related 1 gene in the mouse, causes variable defects in kidney development and hydronephrosis. Am J Physiol Renal Physiol 308: F1335–F1342, 2015. First published April 1, 2015; doi:10.1152/ajprenal.00410.2014.—Many genes, including odd-skipped related 1 (Osr1), are involved in regulation of mammalian kidney development. We describe here a new recessive mutation (kidney adysplasia and variable hydronephrosis, kavh) in the mouse that leads to downregulation of Osr1 transcript, causing several kidney defects: agenesis, hypoplasia, and hydronephrosis with variable age of onset. The mutation is closely associated with a reciprocal translocation, T(12;17)4Rk, whose Chromosome 12 breakpoint is upstream from Osr1. The kavh/kavh mutant provides a model to study kidney development and test therapies for hydronephrosis.

Disruption of Gen1 Causes Congenital Anomalies of the Kidney and Urinary Tract in Mice

Congenital anomalies of the kidney and urinary tract (CAKUT) are among the most common developmental defects in humans. Despite of several known CAKUT-related loci (HNF1B, PAX2, EYA1, etc.), the genetic etiology of CAKUT remains to be elucidated for most patients. In this study, we report that disruption of the Holliday Junction resolvase gene Gen1 leads to renal agenesis, duplex kidney, hydron...

Loss of Dgcr8-mediated microRNA expression in the kidney results in hydronephrosis and renal malformation

BACKGROUND Small non-coding RNA molecules (miRNAs) play a pivotal role in regulating gene expression in development. miRNAs regulate key processes at the cellular level and thereby influence organismal and tissue development including kidney morphogenesis. A miRNA molecule is initially synthesized as a longer hairneedle-shaped RNA transcript and then processed through an enzymatic complex that ...

Correlation between anteroposterior renal pelvic diameter and vesicoureteral reflux in congenital hydronephros

Introduction: One of the most common findings in prenatal evaluation is congenital hydronephrosis. The correct diagnosis is of great value. This study was conducted to find the correlation between Anteroposterior Renal Pelvic Diameter (APD), which is detected by postnatal ultrasonography, and Vesicoureteral Reflux (VUR) in neonates and infants with congenital hydronephrosis. Therefore, this stu...

Ureteral Endometriosis: A Report Of Two Cases

Endometriosis is the presence of benign endometrial glands and stroma outside the uterus. Urinary system involvement by endometriosis is a rare occurrence accounting for only 1.5 % of all endometriosis cases. Case 1. The patient was a 41 years old woman admitted for right flank pain. The physical and gynaecologic examination was unyielding. Intravenous urography (IVU) revealed sten...

بررسی علل هیدرونفروز قبل از تولد و رابطه آن با شدت اتساع لگنچه در نوزادان و شیر خواران

Introduction & Objective: Prenatal hydronephrosis is increasingly reported because of more extensive application of prenatal sonography in the recent decades. Determination of causes of prenatal hydronephrosis could help in better recognition of natural course of disease and designing proper treatment protocol. On the other hand, severity of renal pelvic dilatation in the first sonograph...
